This monthly newsletter for civil society in the lead up to the Follow up Conference on Financing for Development in 2008 leads on the news that the second committee of the General Assembly adopts a resolution spelling out preparatory process. The conference will take place from 29 November to 2 December 2008. The conference will include participation of heads of state of government, ministers and other representatives. It would include plenary meetings and six interactive multi-stakeholder round tables on the six major thematic areas of the Monterry Consensus. Non-governmental organisations and business sector entities would be invited to participate in the Review Conference. Celine Tan, the guest editor for this edition of the newsletter, argues that mobilizing political will is essential for an effective FfD process and outcome. She states that Financing for development remains a major concern fo development countries, and that addressing the obstacles which hinder countries capacity to generate and utilise resources is the key to meeting the goals of the Monterrey Consensus to create a coherent fully inclusive and equitable global economic system in support of the eradication of poverty, achievement of sustained economic growth and promotion of sustainable development. Also in the newsletter, key upcoming events are noted, including the Cairo High -Level Symposium, which is part of the preparatory process for the 2008 Development Cooperation Forum.
